Sparkling X-C Debut For Talli

Our High School Sophomore granddaughter Talli kicked off her second year of varsity cross country by coming in eighth out of nearly 150 runners in the “Assault on Trask Mountain” last Saturday.

In the photo above, taken by her dad, she’s trying not to smile too much as her teammate Emily had just fallen in the creek. Note the muddy, uphill grind they were running in.

Schools from all over northern Oregon participated, and her school, Newberg High, came in fifth, team wise. The 5K run included hills, rivers, rugged terrain and MUD. It was a true test of who’s in shape and who’s not.

Talli’s time was 26:49.34, pretty good for her first fall race. Her friend and teammate, Emily, a senior, finished about 30 seconds ahead of her. The two of them run well together, each helping to pace the other. Way to go, gals. It looks like a good year for both of you!

Ok, dad must intervene a little...

For a 5K race, her time was awful. 5 minutes slower than her slowest race last year. But this meet was insane, almost a different sport than they run the rest of the year. Three river crossings, two huge mud pits, a mile long steep uphill, and a mudslide they had to go up and down. But she finished in the top 5% of a good field.

Next Saturday, at a meet I will miss, she will face her toughest competition of the year until the state meet, on a flat, fast course. She'll run against 32 schools, including the top 5A team in the state, and 3 6A schools in the top 10. They do it in heats, and she'll be running a heat against the top 2 runners from every school. It will be blisteringly fast...and I predict a time for her around 20:00 minutes.

Just wanted the internet world to have context for that 26:49. :)

So, can't a grandpa accentuate the positive? :-) She did come in 8th out of a very large field!

:) No, she did great! I just didn't want people to think that we thought 26:49 was a good time for her, because that's a JV time on every other course.
